Sintra as the Setting for a Mystery Novel
Some places seem to hold a story before anyone begins to write it. In Sintra, a road disappearing into the trees, a wall covered in vegetation or a house with shuttered windows can be the beginning of a question. In a mystery novel, that question is often the first step towards an investigation.
This meeting between familiar places and the things we do not know about them lies at the heart of Sintra Mysteries, the crime fiction series by Eurico Corvacho, published by ASPONE Editions.
A landscape that shapes the investigation
The setting of a crime novel influences how characters meet, what they can observe and which routes they can take. A seemingly short distance may prove significant. Light can change the way a photograph is understood. A path known to one person may remain unnoticed by everyone else.
Sintra, Portugal, offers rich possibilities for this kind of storytelling. The town, the surrounding hills and the houses scattered across the landscape bring different settings and rhythms into close proximity. Some places are passed through; others have been home to the same families for generations. Between them move memories, conflicting accounts and stories that change according to who is telling them.
Mist and vegetation help create the atmosphere, but a mystery can also begin in broad daylight, with an ordinary conversation or a detail that nobody thought important.
Traces of the past, clues in the present
In crime fiction, an old document takes on meaning when someone recognises its connection to the present. A photograph may reveal an unexpected presence. Silence may protect a person, a family or a particular account of events.
In Sintra Mysteries, the investigation follows these traces of the past. The characters seek to understand what happened and why certain people still avoid speaking about it. Readers share in that process, weighing clues and explanations as the story unfolds.
Real places provide a recognisable point of reference. The crimes, characters and relationships belong to the world of fiction.
The Guardian’s Shadow: the first mystery
The Guardian’s Shadow, originally published in Portuguese as A Sombra do Guardião, begins with the discovery of a young man’s body in the Sintra hills. Inspector Miguel Duarte follows an investigation involving old families, forgotten documents and a photograph from the early 1950s.
With the help of Eleanor Whitcombe, a British investigator with ties to Sintra, he tries to solve a crime whose answers appear to depend on events from long before.
For readers interested in mystery novels set in Portugal, the first volume introduces a world of investigation, memory and secrets rooted in Sintra. The Portuguese edition is available in digital and print formats. The English edition, The Guardian’s Shadow, is in preparation.
